General Press on "Baby"
The original production hit Broadway in 1983 and played 276 times, including previews. Performers included Liz Callaway, Beth Fowler, and future screenwriter Todd Graff (Used People, The Beautician And The Beast) as Danny. It used nothing more than a continuous curtain on figure-8 tracking to suggest the various locales. The on-stage orchestra was visible throughout. For the touring company, a few changes were made, including the elimination of a film that played in between scenes to show the development of a fetus. The writers are on their way to becoming household names. Most recently the team of Maltby and Shire wrote the smash hit big, the musical and independently, Maltby worked on Miss Saigon and Shire is an Oscar-winner for his film music and the two sired a pair of sellout revues of their material, Closer Than Ever and Starting Here, Starting Now.
Shire writes with sophistication over a range that embraces rock, jazz and the best of Broadway schmaltz ... Maltby's lyrics are not just smart and funny, but often ingenious."

"Pearson's book is agreeably smart ... it has style and energy, a rare combination."
